Aug. 14th, 2005 04:12 pmLast week I said I was trying to make a list of scary movies appropriate for munchkins for my cousin and her son-
Nature Gone Bad
Deep Blue Sea (1999) Smart Sharks!
The Birds (1963) Hitchcock. Vintage.
Bats (1999/I) Smart Bats!
Frogs (1972) Killer Frogs!
Classics
Frankenstein (1931) and it's sequals. Universal just released inexpensive boxed sets of this, Dracula (1931/I) , Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) , The Wolf Man (1941) and others. Scary, but not too scary.
The Mummy (1999) , it's sequal and the original The Mummy (1932)
AVOID "VAN HELSING" AT ALL COSTS. It's craptacular.
Anything with Vincent Price
Especially The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) , Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) ,
Theatre of Blood (1973) (crazed actor killing with methods taken from Shakespeare. Yes, Shakespeare. That means Theatre of Blood is EDUCATIONAL) The Fly (1958) (NOT the 80's version) House on Haunted Hill (1959) and The Bat (1959) (with Agnes "Endora" Moorehead)
Zombies etc
Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978) - "Day of..." is ok-ish too but there's a lot of crazy military guys using BAD language. Note these are the originals. The remake of Dawn has some inappropriate stuff in it.
C.H.U.D. (1984) - zombie things in the sewers. cheesy fun. shower scene, but edited. (i'm pretty sure.)
John Carpenter
The Fog (1980) - The Best Scary Movie Ever. Others may disagree, but they aren't as smart as I am.
The Thing (1982) - it's sci-fi, but it's still scary... if you rent the dvd, you have to watch the making of stuff to see how they did some of the effects. This movie is 23 years old and the effects are better than anything computer generated.
WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?
The Others (2001) -Nicole Kidman, spoOoOoOoOoky.
C.H.U.D. (1984) Final Destination (2000) and Final Destination 2 (2003) - Remember the game Mousetrap? Action 1 causes thing1 to happen, which triggers thing2... so forth and so on til the net gets the mouse? These are like this, but with the trap killing you instead. All right... they're basically one grusome death after another, but they're CREATIVE gruesome deaths. and when they're not horrific, they're funny.
The Blair Witch Project (1999) Sticks and Stones: Investigating the Blair Witch (1999) (V) Curse of the Blair Witch (1999) (TV) The latter two are "documentaries" about the subject. All three should be watched together... first the docu's then the movie itself. I've got 'em on vhs if you'd like to borrow them. Avoid BW2 at all costs.
Scary people with knives chasing bimbos
ummm no. Not even Halloween (1978) - why? Boobs. "oh, i'm scared- there's a killer out there... i'd better take a shower!" Really. That's pretty much a convention of the genre. "i'm young and pretty, i can't act, but i'm willing to take off my shirt."
This includes A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) and Friday the 13th (1980) .
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) is just... disturbing- no boos, just freaky.
I don't remember boobs in the remake, actually what I remember most about the remake is the fact that they were able to make me think of this painting ( http://www.artchive.com/artchive/w/wyeth/christinas_world.jpg ). Oh wait... I remember... there's something REAL bad in the remake.
SO, for the time being, NO SCARY PEOPLE WITH KNIVES CHASING BIMBOS MOVIES. (that I can reccommed. if you want to take a chance, the boobs in Halloween are the minimalistist.)
