I have a new bedtime story.
My old one was War of the Worlds. I'd lie in my bed and listen to it in the dark... and fall asleep before the siege of New York. There are some real nice bits. My two favourite are the death of the reporter- he's reporting from the field and he's giving on the spot coverage and the death rays zapping and all of a sudden in the middle of a sentence he-
stops. Silence. Then a broadcaster comes on and says that it's been interrupted... here's some music. A little later there's a broadcast from atop a building in NYC, watching the evacuation of the city as the Martian Death Gas approaches from New Jersey- the sound of buoys in the river, and boat horns and fog horns and traffic sounds. Then the boat horns cease. Then the traffic horns cease... all that's left is the buoys and fog horns.
My new favourite bedtime story is Shoggoths Old Peculiar by Neil Gaiman. He's reading it in concert and the crowd isn't too distracting. His voice is great. Time to go to bed... more about the story later.

I got to see Gaiman read that piece when I was in San Francisco. He's got a great voice and he's at least as funny in person as his writing is both in that one and "Good Omens". Is "Shoggoth's" available in a short story collection in the U.S.?
