The grand adventure really began Thursday night, when Sister Alice was kind enough to drive to Norfolk to pick me up, during a light dusting of snow. Brave soul, she.
Crashed at her place, hanging out with BiL Joe, watching their ubercable direct tv. No, we don't really *need* a kajillion channels. But they sure are nice.
Friday I watched TV til my sister came back from work, and from there she took me to Bender's where I picked up the first three issues of Warren Ellis's Ocean.
The trip to Yorktown took us down 17, which has alway been a favourite of mine since you can theoretically drive all the way from Florida to Maine. Ah, one day...
SO- I checked in at the Duke of York about four thirty and settled in, got comfy pretty quick. Good comfortable bouncy bed. Hotel room beds are like, for me, the uber couch.
After dealing with my sister's dogs, I needed to take a shower. Strong pressure, nice hot water.
I sound like Special Agent Cooper don't I? Damn fine cup of coffee.
Speaking of coffee: hotel room coffee, no matter where you are, is good for jumpstarting in the morning. Except for the decaf. That works as a great placebo. Drink it at night, while writing. It *feels* like the same old coffe that goes great with writing and cigarettes, but it doesn't kill the sleeping.
Food. Friday I ate at the Yorktown Pub. Local place, great Reuben. Excellent, rich clam chowder, New England style. Nice Crowd. Busy despite approaching snow storm.
The Saturday I had lunch at the Waterstreet Landing. Nearly empty, due to snowfall, captive audience since the Island Cafe closed early.
I had another cup of chowder, not as good as the Pub's, but still good.
This was followed by grilled tuna bites. Yummy, lightly spiced, moist, tender.
Dinner Saturday night was with my friend C., at Joe & Mimma's Italian Restuarant. We both had a Caeser salad and calamari. Calamari were fried, lightly, and came with marinarara sauce.
Breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday were at the Island Cafe at the Duke of York. Killer pancakes. Bacon was at the right point... not too crsipy, but still slightly chewy. And Grits. Such grits. Not too watery, not too dry. Friday, I ate them last and the top layer had congealed nicely, but Saturday, I devoured them right off the bat. Plain, done well enough that I didn't have to even add butter.
Honestly, the last time I've had a breakfast this good, it was at my parent's house. I plan on going back, and soon, to see what they do with lunch.
Aside from eating and hanging out with C Saturday night, I spent most of the weekend in my room, writing. I got 2.5k words out. That's the most I've written since abandoning True North back in October. I think I've got something and I'm on a roll. Just gotta keep up the momentum.

Amazing what peace and fine food will do for one

Well I am glad the Holiday was so beneficial to your cause both gastronomically and in the realm of bon mots. Twenty five hundred cohesive words are an achievement for anyone on a weekend you should be stoked! I may have to do something akin to this soon as the corporate world seems to have closed in upon me again and very little light is getting to the brain, much less the eyes.
