Mar. 13th, 2005 10:33 pmmmm. I'm going to try and be serious here for a moment. I'm not really that good at it but here goes...
My father lost a friend of his recently. I haven't had anyone close to me pass on in a while so my understanding is... limited. But I'm glad my father met this man. You see, he's was never what I'd consider a reader, but after meeting Mr. H, he began reading more, largely because Mr. H read. One of their favourite authors was Lee Child, so much so that a couple of books ago, they couldn't wait for the domestic release, so they ordered it from Amazon UK. It was... special seeing this facet of my father... a guy so taken with an author he considered going to a convention in Las Vegas - he eventually just ordered a signed copy from a store Child had done a signing at. And it was a real kick in the pants to see a copy of The Cryptonomicon at my parent's house and finding out, yes, it was my dad that was reading it. I mean, it's a dense book even to me, but Mr H reccommended it, so my dad was reading it. Even enjoying it.
It's weird to say, but I owe Mr H for doing this because sometimes... well, sometimes I worry I don't have enough in common with my father. But Mr H gave us a little more common ground. I never got around to telling him that.
So...
Damn.
I hate trying to write stuff like this. Ok, I'll just end it on a warmly saccharine note about my dad reading Child's next book when it comes out in June and Mr H, looking down, reading over his shoulder.
Ah.
God.
Well, I said I wasn't very good at this sort of thing.
