The Overnight
Mar. 18th, 2005 09:00 amThere's this author... Ramsey Campbell. He's not bad.
Ok, he's great. The Man Is A God.
I say this because I'm reading his latest Stateside release right now, The Overnight- a haunted bookstore on inventory night. I haven't finished it since I'm deliberately pacing myself, I don't want it to end.
At last, a realistic book set in a bookstore. Realistic in the sense it reflects the experience of being behind the counter... not the part of the "something" affecting the store. One of my favourite bits so far is the running point of "no personal phone calls." I hate them. Largely because I don't get any. Even when my mom calls, she's looking for a book (bless her heart).
All the weirdness at the store apparently comes to a boil during an overnight inventory- which is what my store's doing tonight.
I remember
docbrite had some nice things to say about it a while back in her lj, having received a copy of the UK edition. Coupling that with the fact that the chain Campbell worked for is related to the nameless mall chain bookstore I work for, I was eager to read it. When Fango reviewed it recently, I ordered a couple of copies for the store. It's great. On the strength of the Fango review and the dust jacket copy, even the non-horror reading co-workers are looking forward to getting it.
Go, buy, read.

I've created a list of books every bookseller should read. It's two books long:
Olivia Goldsmith's The Bestseller- a look at what it takes to get a book published.
and The Overnight.
More books added as I think of them.

Holy Cow. Just fer giggles I took a look at the NYT non fic paperback best sellers at amazon. Of the fifteen, I've read seven: The Tipping Point, The Devil in the White City, Tuesdays with Morrie, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Under the Banner of Heaven, and Stiff . Damn. I'm feelin' smarter all ready.
