Cthulhu Mania!
Apr. 3rd, 2005 03:25 amWe had a fellow in the bookstore today, looking for books on The Cthulhu Mythos. He'd read all of HP Lovecraft, and needed to KNOW MORE.
Not "Enjoyed Lovecraft, and would enjoy reading other similar authors." Nope. That'd be too, well, sane.
I eventually steered him to one of the anthologies edited by Robert Price.
THEN he said the N word.
Heh. Not that. If only... nope. I was asked if we had copies of the Necronomicon. I made sure that he understood that the Necronomicon was The Blair Witch Project* of occult texts, then I pointed out the word "FICTION" on the copyright page. He said that it wouldn't be a problem, because he was... sigh. He was writing a novel and he needed it for reference.
And in a perfect world, I'd have kicked him in the groin. That would have made my day.
I just crawled away. I wanted to say "You need reference books? Ever heard of Strunk and White?", but I was afraid of the answer.
Why are people today so damn stupid?
*They're not hoaxes. They're FICTIONS. Just because stupid people think they're real doesn't make them less fictious.
"...in that lair of the Deep Ones we shall dwell amidst wonder and glory forever and ever, Amen."
