Right now, I'm listening to Arcade Fire's "Wake Up," over and over again. I was introduced to them by an NPR story a while back and finally got around to dl'ing a track. Nice stuff. When I listen to music, I "see" the music in images sometimes. "Wake Up", oddly enough, makes me think "sunrises." There's a bit of choral stuff at the beginning... about 25 seconds in that just screams to me "sun coming over the horizon." Then a slow build, like a city coming to life, all of this, in my mind, in the context of the Virginia Beach ocean front, oddly enough. Buses, cars in a Koyannisquatsi like flow...
And I'm not even really listening to the lyrics. Lately, it's all about aural texture. Get it here, free (and legal).

Another fun thing that's come my way from NPR is Les Sans Coulottes. My French is totally "le merde", but if I'm deciphering correctly... um, coulottes are pants, right? The Without Pants? ANYWAY... Sixties French music by 21st centuary Americans. Did you see the first Austin Powers movie? He was supposed to be this photographer/spy/rockstar, and the first movie included some musical bits with his band "Ming Tea"- a total waste of Matthew Sweet & Susannah Hoff's talent, by the way- that were supposed to be sixties style, swinging rock. But not quite. LSC pulls it off- both tribute and parody... their site has a journal written in character and they've got a couple of MP3's available, including a clip from the totally bouncy fun "Allo, Allo." I'm all about any song that features the phrase "le fromage blanc" and a singer named Celine Dijon.
Give it a listen. It's free. It's enjoyable even if you call your sliced pommes d'terre "Freedom Fries." Check the NPR article here.
