Wow. A friend of mine just told me he's got a pass for me for SouthWest Airlines. Good for a year. All I need now is to figure out where to go. New Orleans has always interested me. I loved the time I spent in San Francisco. And lately, I've been reading a lot of Lovecraft, so it'd be cool to go to Providence.
Anyone know how pedestrian friendly New Orleans and Providence are?
Thanks for all replies!

woo hoo! exciting news! my vote with SWA passes is to go as far as possible, because they don't take miles into consideration. more bang for your buck, so to speak. there's always plenty to do in san fran to justify a repeat visit! or chicago... when we were in new orleans, we mostly left the car parked. i'm sure you could do it up right with no problem, without transpo. don't know anything about providence, except that it's only three hours from rhinebeck NY...

NOLA is Great for Peds

Between the busses, The streetcars (great cheap way to get a tour of the Garden District), and the Cabs, you can get around NOLA. The Quarter is pretty much foot traffic anyway. Nice Shops on Royal, Interesting ones on Decatur.... If you need I've got all the guide books.

As long as you get a hotel downtown, Providence is pretty pedestrian-friendly. And you can take a train into Boston, which is much more pedestrian-friendly. Providence is beautiful...in spring or fall. It's kind of neat to go looking around at all the old houses Lovecraft talked about. Kind of nice to see his grave, but it's a pretty bland one.

I don't know anything about New Orleans.
