Wednesday night, my parents and I saw Downfall at the Naro.
A two and a half hour movie in German with subtitles about the fall of Berlin.
Because that's just the kind of movie I see, with my parents, at the Naro.
And it was good. Remarkably so.
It doens't excuse anything the Nazis did, but it still managed to humanize them, even Hitler.
Of course, having Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) play Hitler didn't hurt.
The film spends most of the time in the bunker, but despite this, it never seems claustrophobic. Indeed, in it's own way the movie is quite epic.
Larger then life persons living in extraordinary times.
The truly amazing thing about this is the lack of CGI. Between the effects and the acting, this is not a film that could be made in the States. This is a war movie like they used to make.
