Jun. 24th, 2005 03:42 pmUSA Today did an article a couple of days ago where they called Land of the Dead "Star Wars for Horror fans." And you know... they're right. I still haven't seen Revenge of the Sith. I've finally figured out why.
There was no compulsion back in whenever Phantom Menace came out to watch the Original Trilogy... but right now I'm halfway through Day of the Dead in anticipation of Land of the Dead- the noon show at MacArthur. Yep. I'm not Star Wars guy anymore, now I'm Zombie guy... and I'm NOT putting up with interactive audience.
This'll be my first big screen Romero and I'm not letting anything interfere with it.
It's interesting to watch the progression of decay in Romero World... I wonder what things would have looked like.if he'd gotten around to doing one in the 90's.

Back... I never got around to posting the first part of this.
WOW.
It was great. Won't go into too much detail for those who haven't seen it yet, but he's actually managed to make a semi-sympathetic undead anti-hero. Plus the standard subtle/obvious message subtext bits. This time, he's a lot more complex than "braindead consumerism is bad" or "braindead military/bureaucracy is bad." In Land of the Dead, the message seems... grander. And there are some pretty good jump moments. Wimp that I am, I actually exclaimed "Holy Fuck" once. Fortunately there were only five others in the theater with me.
