Sep. 18th, 2002 12:33 amToronto Trip recap: (August 23-Sept1)
Arrived on Friday. Flew up. Hung out at Buffalo airport, wrote. Brian picked me up after he got off work, braving the traffic on a friday. Took Brian and his daughter, Brit, to dinner at Freida's.
Saturday we all went to the CNE. Exhibition of Chainsaw art. Cat show. Dog show. Cat lovers are creepy people. I rode a Ferris Wheel and a roller coaster. Not sure but I think I used a vulgarity in front of Brian's daughter and her friend on the roller coaster. Saw an exhibition of freaks (note- link for freaks doesn't work... oops. Keep Reading.) Not the whole show mind you, just a trailer full, including the Fiji mermaid. Amazing fireworks show to end the evening. Stopped at a Krispy Kreme for donuts en route home.
Sunday- Dropped Brit off at camp.
Monday- I relaxed to the best of my abilities.
Tuesday-Toronto- Brian gets to work early so he gave me a lift to the oakville train station at 0-dark-30. Via Train/ Go Train. Confusion. Apparently Via Rail (think Amtrak) isn't the same thing as the Go Train (think... oh, tidewater doesn't really have an analog. the trains/subways of New York are the best analogy) CN Tower. CBC Museum. Shopping. Bookstores abound.
Wednesday- Made dinner. The most fun part was the electronic check out at the market - Zehrs. No need for clerks. As "retail guy" this both fascinated me and appalled me. After dinner, Bingo. It was fun. If you inhale the markers enough, you feel funny.
Thursday- down time. Lots of downtime. I *was* on vacation, after all. Watched several episodes of Street Legal. I don't relax enough. Got some writing done during the trip as well.
Friday- Took Brian to dinner at Crabby Joes
Saturday-Picked Brit up at camp. Dinner with Brian's family in Waterloo. Saw "Signs" at Galaxy Cinemas at Cambridge Centre
Sunday- flight home, hold up in Detroit as the "hydraulics" needed checking and when they checked it they found they needed to replace a transponder, and an "o" ring. "O" ring isn't what you want to hear relative to an airplane flight
At some point we heard "New Orleans is Sinking" by the Tragically Hip. On the radio.
For some unknown reason, the Hip hasn't garnered the attention they deserve in the States. Before I left, I bought a carton of cigarettes. I had one to tide me over once I got home (on a Sunday. The next day, Monday, was Labor Day and the smoke shop was closed. Glad I stocked up.)
Pardon the hyperlinks. I haven't gotten my pictures up yet. Will have a page on my main page for that. ** PS- Suze pointed out that the Freaks hyperlink doesn't work. Mea Culpa (L. for "my bad"). Here's the proper URL: www.carnivaldiablo.com . " It's not bad grammar, it's Joycean"
