Sep. 20th, 2002 02:25 amWhere did music go wrong? I bought Jackie Brown on DVD yesterday and it has an amazing soundtrack, mostly R&B/Soul stuff from the 70's. Not all the happiest of songs, but rich in lyricism and melody. Randy Crawford's Street Life. Bobby Womack's Across 110th Street. Songs about the city, and the urban hell of living there. Drugs. Prostitution. Oddly, they're not too far from a lot of the stuff being done now, with the exception of being listenable. Sung by people who know how to sing. Performed by musicians. Real ones. Like horns. Strings. And now... if you want to hear stuff like this, you've got to watch old movies. The songs still address the subjects, but the new stuff lacks a style and sophistication of an earlier generation. Sometimes I weep for the children.
