Aug. 8th, 2006 02:17 amSunday,
seaphilo and I went to the Naro and saw 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
I'll let her discuss it here, some of the "idea" parts, anyway.
I'll take the artsy- fartsy stuff.
Brilliantly clear print, vibrant colours.
The sound... ok... I try to pay attention to this stuff, but aside from "whooshing" spaceships in Lucas movies, is there much Left Channel, Right Channel use in sound effects these days? The instrumentation on the Nautilus, bells and buzzers... it was clear where they came from, relative to the characters.
The effects still hold up. The matte work for the windows of the Nautilus looked pretty real and the underwater photography was phenomenal.
Young Kirk Douglas, with his shaggy red hair reminded me of a studly Dennis Leary.
Peter Lorre... When I think of Lorre, it's usually in the context of The Maltese Falcon... so seeing him so... filled out, shall we say, was different. He still had that creepiness about him.
James Mason. Another actor from a different context- I usually think of him in Salem's Lot. But seeing his torment, haunted Nemo, I can imagine him playing Maxim de Winter in Rebecca.
And the real star: The Giant Squid. Aside from the way the squid swims, tentacles first, rather than the head first manner, the squid seemed, well, real enough. I mean, it was fifty years ago, so the effects ARE dated. Impressive attention to detail: suckermarks on the face of a sailor rescued from the squid.
All in all, well worth watching, and rewatching. Better than a lot of the stuff that makes it to the Omegaplex these days.

Good lord. There are netmonkeys discussing how 2kLUtS should be remade. As a trilogy.
Because a) you need to have a female lead in a movie to make it work, and b) two books about the same character = three movies.
They ignore the simple fact that there HAVE been remakes.
Neither of which look stunning. Except for the presence of Paul Gross. But that's just bias on my part.

Jenna Elfman's an scientologist. Explains a lot.
