clayhornikToday is HP Lovecraft's birthday. When I was in elementary school, I got a copy of The Shadow Over Innsmouth and Other Stories of Horror.
It was from Scholastic, and it's so old there's no ISBN information, no barcode.
The damage was done at an early age.
When I was in high school, the summer of before my senior year, my family did a road trip through New England. We hit all the important places- Plymouth Rock, Salem, LL Bean. My father knew how much I loved Lovecraft and he detoured us through Providence. In my paperback copy of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, I've got pictures of the house from the story- the street address anyway. The house proper isn't actually at that street number apparently.
No matter how crappy things get, I know there are worse things that could happen- like the Old Ones returning.
So thank you, Old Man, for the stories.
