Jan. 14th, 2003 12:02 amHad to repack my books as a couple of the people involved weren't able to make it. Thursday flight there was without a hitch. Dad picked me up at o-dark-thirty, gave me a ride to the airport. Raining in SF. Walked 2 blocks in the rain, got a cab to finish the remaining five blocks. Checked in and the first person I run into was Coop. Hit the dealers room. Bought a bunch of stuff. First event I went to was a Q&A with Reggie Bannister, not too many people there, which was nice, very cozy. He gave us the scoop on his upcoming movie Bubba-ho-tep, as well as reminiscences about his work on the Phantasm series. Ran into Paul, from the PZB board. Can't remember dinner... it was that fun. Went to a mass signing at Borderlands Books, getting books signed by Allen Clark, Simon Clark, Rain Graves and David Schow. There were other authors there, but I was got their stuff signed later.
Back to the hotel, in time to watch The Convent. It was pretty much a by the numbers thriller. It was over by 11pm PST or so and I crashed, since I'd been up since 5 am EST.
Slept VERY well.
Chinatown for breakfast, got a bowtie and a cuppa at a little Chinese bakery. Ran into Coop, Chad Savage and a couple of regulars- Maria and Jennifer(?)- from Poppy's phorum, more coffee. Had lunch with Coop, Poppy, Maria and Jennifer. Coop got his "hot-n-sour soup".
Back to the Ramsey Campbell reading. Coop, Poppy, David Schow, and a group of us went for more coffee, skipping a retrospective on Clark Ashton Smith, but returning because Mr Schow had to do a reading. I skipped the next two events, the first was a second Q&A with Mr Bannister, and the second was some sort of movie thing... I purchased a coppy of the Gloom Cookie trade paperback and got it autographed by the author and artist. The next big event was a preview of The House of 1000 Corpses, hosted byBill Mosley. Can we say KICK ASS?
I hit a Indian Resturant for dinner, had chicken curry in my room.
Saw The Dead Hate the Living, another by the numbers zombie film, redeemed only by the author/director's obvious love of the genre. Got invited to the Borderlands room party. Chatted with Katrina and Sherilyn, two absolutely charming young ladies with a cable access show there in San Francisco. Apparently, cable access is something completely different out there. Missed the wackyness involving Poppy, Coop, and a beaver.
Had four rum and cokes made by the charming and well dressed Jude from Borderlands... Click here * for pictures from the party.
Next morning, coffee and bowtie from the same bakery, picked up some Chinese New Year goodies for Rogue, got a VCD of a film calledDark Water.
Then I went to the first reading of the day: Maria Alexander and Christa Faust. Ms Alexander's work was enjoyable, but Ms Faust's was... incredible. It was about cutting. as a fetish. Toward the end I had to remind myself to breathe. Afterwards, I was fortunate enough to join Ms Brite for lunch at a nearby Chinese resturant. She introduced me to the dish of porrige with preserved egg and lean pork, something I enjoyed so much I went back there for dinner. After Lunch, Poppy was reading with Coop. Coop's story was... amazing.Shivers. Go, and buy it now.
I nearly had to commit a hatecrime on some of Poppy's fans, a couple of kids who showed up late, sat down in front of Paul and I- we were in the second row- and whispered to each other. One even sent a text message with his cell phone. Damn kids.
Poppy read a short story about her protagonists from her book, The Value of X. I can not praise the novel enough, and hearing the story prior to finishing the novel gave TVoX added depth. After Poppy & Geoff were done, I stuck around to hear Ramsey Campbell read again and a video presentation by David Schow, including a short film by Alex Proyas and behind the scene clips from The Crow.
I hit the dealer's room again and picked up two treats: Battle Royale and Rock and Rule. I went to the Zombie Beauty Pagent, then went to crash, since I had to be up early to catch my flight home. Sunday Morning I took the BART back to the airport, luck to have caught up with Paul at the AirBart station, we chatted on the bus ride back about how much we enjoyed the weekend. The plane flight back home was hellish, and I didn't get home til 1 am.
Will talk about the movies and books later.
