Mar. 4th, 2008 11:18 pmI haven't played a Role Playing Game in years.
I haven't played Dungeons and Dragons in decades.
Nonetheless, when collectable card games, like Magic:The Addiction were popping up on the scene, I sneered at them, because they lacked the idealistic purity of RPGs.
Then when Magic's masters, Wizards of the Coast, bought TSR, the card people claimed victory, but D&D re-asserted itself, with third, then 3.5 editions. You can go into pretty much any uberbox book store and find D&D books- but no Magic.
Now D&D is gearing up for another revamp- 4.0.
A couple of years ago, a friend gave me a copy of the Hack Master Players Manual. A sweet thing. An authorized parody using the original source material.

Please compare:

My copy disappeared years ago. But I found a copy of the players guide back in January, buying it out of nostalgia.
See the author's name there on the cover? Gary Gygax.
E. Gary Gygax passed away today.
Sigh.
