The saddest thing in the thrift store:  A candle, about a foot long, with numbers, larger numbers at the bottom, smaller numbers at the top, designed to be burned once a year on the child's birthday.  This one had 1burnt away, othewise untouched.  We chatted about why it could be in a second hand store, and none of the theories are particularly warm and fuzzy.
