Ok, I'm been unfortunately lax in my writing the last few days. Not really my writing as much as my posting- so here's the bits & pieces that have accumulated over since late January, and much of it is slightly dated:

I had a frightening moment this morning: I thought I'd lost my writing. Not my ability to write, but everything I've written since I got my laptop.
One hundred and thirty files. Twenty-two megabytes. Articles, reviews, short stories and The Novel mark 1, 2, 3, and 4. Not to mention just snippits that I might be able to use somewhere. Gone.
I think the phrase Word Perfect used was "drive error", which translates to "GONE" in human. I checked where I keep my writing- in a file cleverly titled "My Writing"- in My Documents. It was, indeed, gone.
Despite my racing pulse, I hit ‘search' and sent the computer looking for the file, found quickly in the "My Videos" file. It was like losing hotel room 105, and finding it in room 107. Simple solution.
It's also one of those charming ‘object' lessons life throws at us periodically. This time, it was the universe telling me to back up my writing more often. Ok, God, point taken.

Bread and Circuses:
The Uberbowl was this weekend. Of course the spectacle of large men in body armour pounding on each other while chasing an inflated pig skin is never enough.
The NFL foolishly allowed MTV to produce the halftime show. This is akin to asking Hunter S. Thompson to head a council on handgun control. I didn't watch it, but I've seen the footage. Yes, I believe Janet Jackson forgot to wear a bra and the Justin Timberlake accidently ripped her top. Just like we accidently invaded Iraq.

Wednesday-
Damn, I really need to start posting this stuff as soon as I get home, rather than logging into yahoo and chatting with people in Ft McMurry, Alberta and Uy, (check province) China. Now, that was an interesting experience, chatting with someone in China. First, I was impressed with his fluency in English. Much stronger than mine in Mandarin. Second, I was surprised that I could. I've heard a great deal about how the Chinese have a serious lockdown on what comes and goes via the net, yet there I was seeing via webcam, someone half a world away.

Bread and Circuses 2
There was a girl abducted, Sunday, in Florida. The abduction was videotaped, so her kidnapper was seen in the footage. But what was the media's big story the last couple of days? Janet Jackson. Enough already. People are dying in Iraq, there's Ricin on Capital Hill, and assorted other things that actually quualify as NEWS, and the media's making a publicity stunt into an EVENT. Of course, I blame the media. They blow the celebrities out of proportion, give them more attention than they deserve, and we lap it up. I suppose if I were slightly more misanthropic, I'd say we get the news we deserve. I've started watching Newshour on PBS, Nightline, and (CBN News)- the last just to get stories from a differeent perspective. It's got a somewhat conservative slant, even moreso than FoxNews, but at least they're pretty obvious about it.

I've realize just how the net is bringing the world together again after chatting, with video with someone from Kuwiat.

Things after the fact:
The girl in Florida has been found dead. There aren't too many events I'll actually describe as ‘tragic'. Horrible, monsterous, sure are all good words to describe bombings and the horrors of war, all the events in the mideast. But this thing in Florida. Tragic is the only thing that comes to mind. The abduction footage allowed us watching at home a glimmer of hope; we SAW the bastard grab her. Like something out of a movie. And we all know movies have happy endings, right? Unfortunately, this is real life. There's no last minute rescue of the princess by a knight on a white horse. Bruce Willis isn't coming. Damn.
