So part of our getting settled in was to get library cards, primarily so we could use the Internet there (we still haven't been home long enough to make an appointment) though we've been checking books out as well since we're dealing with limited book shelf space.
Last night I was looking at the new releases when I saw The Big Roads: The Untold Story of the Engineers, Visionaries, and Trailblazers Who Created the American Superhighways. Then I saw the author: Earl Swift, a journalist from Norfolk that I knew from my time at the bookstore. Very cool.
The book is fascinating- as someone who logs around thirty hours a week on the big roads it's nice to get some history on them aside from the occasional blue sign marked "Eisenhower Interstate System" seen upon exiting a rest stop. What's exceptionally sweet is that Swift covers several topics that are dear to my heart, including Howard Johnsons, Stuckeys, South of the Border, and designer Norman Bel Geddes.
Despite having picked up The Big Roads at the library, I'd gladly add this book to my permanent collection.
Below: the book with I 80 as its backdrop.
