Feb. 8th, 2002 12:41 amI think my chemicals are kind of messed up. I've started getting teary at commercials. The one that gets me is the spelling bee, where the girl is spelling microphone "EM EYE SEE" and then an older gentleman in the audience says "KAY EE WHY" and one of the judges follows up with "M-O-U-S-E". The spelling bee then disintegrates into a joyous riot of baby boomers, parents and grandparents of the kids at the bee, singing the Mickey Mouse Club March. There's just this... overwhelming feeling of JOY in the commercial. YES, I realize, it's an AD. It's supposed to.
But I'm supposed to be savvy enough to realize that.
I remember watching The Mickey Mouse Club in reruns when I was a kid. I even watched the new Mickey Mouse Club in the 70's. Don't remember it that well. Blissfully repressing the memories, I guess. But Annette, The Hardy Boys, Spin & Marty, they're still lodged firmly in my sense of nostalgia.
And then there's the Parent Trap... Ah, Hailey Mills. "Let's Get Together, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah." That's by the Sherman Brothers, by the way, the geniuses who brought us more songs in Disney films that I can count, but you can bet I can sing them all. They were responsible for "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins. Want to see me get *really* teary? Play that song.
