Feb. 18th, 2002 12:42 amI think one of my neighbors was beating up his girlfriend last night. It was kind of scary, listening to her crying and him yelling. I wanted to do something... like call the cops, but was... hesitant. I thought she was actually another neighbor. So ... um.. I called her to make sure she was ok. At quarter to four. a.m.
She was cool with that tho... she couldn't sleep either. She was touched I was concerned enough to call. I told her not to tell people. I'm the grumpy guy in the building. The one who yells at kids not to fly their kites so loudly.
I wish I could remember the name of the woman who was killed in NYC in the 60's. Just outside of her apt, the neighbors heard her screaming and didnt do anything. I read a couple of books recently that mentioned her- one was "Watchmen". Read this book. Alan Moore. It's not JUST a comic book.
The other one was called The Tipping Point. It dealt with ideas and ummm... stuff.
Anyway- it mentions her because it proposes the reason she was killed was not because no one cared, it was just they expected someone else to help her. The book also looked at other "Good Samaritian" scenarios. Non-fiction can be fun too.
