Saw The Bourne Supremacy this morning with my mom. Fun fast movie, what I've decided a Bond film should be. Bourne's a killer. That's what he does. Kill. Like Bond. That never makes for a healthy psyche. So he gets out. And just as he thinks his raft is floating slowly, quietly down the river, a whirlpool sucks him into the violent world of international espionage.
No jokes. No gadgets. No cleverly named sexkittens. No freaky bad guys.
Just danger and death.
Matt Damon surprisingly good as an action star. His Jason Bourne has seen a lot. Too much. Theres a distance in him, a gravity that's only gone when he's with the woman he loves, Run Lola Run's Franka Potente; we all know what happen to the women in their lives in movies like these, don't we? (Rather like Diana Rigg to George Lazenby...*)

I wish I'd taken Frankie with us. As much fun as the movie was, the thunderstorm before hand, outside the theatre rocked.
Frankie likes storms.

There's nothing on television tonight. I suppose I could fixate on the fact that the local news has used the H word to describe Tropical Storm Alex. Great. As if the rain rain rain hasn't been coming down down down for the last fortnight or so.
Nah. I'll just watch The Fog. Gil and Frankie like The Fog. Frankie says it's because The Fog is GOTHIC, while Gil's a big William Hope Hodgson fan and The Fog's probably the closest we'll ever get to The Ghost Pirates. (Wow... on the MGM page for the movie, they've got a clip of John Houseman playing Mr Machen... play it with the lights off.)

In the mall record store recently, looking at their "local music" display. Featuring X. I'm in Norfolk Virginia. So I picked up the disc. "Burning House of Love." "Breathless." Yep. X. That X**. From LA. The one lad I asked about it didn't know who they were... (checks IMDB)... Breathless. 1983. Same year that More Fun In the New Word came out. Little twerp probably wasn't even BORN. It wouldn't bother me so much if he weren't PAID to know such things.

Holy Cow! The Black Hole is coming out on DVD tomorrow. More atmospheric than logical, and the incidental score was kind of... goofy, but the main theme was absolutely terrifying. Right up there with anything Bernard Herrman wrote to play during the shower. Beautiful matte work on the SFX.

*(Hey, On Her Majesty's Secret Service was my first Bond. And it had Diana Rigg. Mmmmm leather catsuits. She could give Halle Berry some lessons.)
** (Do you have any idea how difficult it is to do a google search on X?)

yup.

she's gotta snuff it to facilate the male fantasy lifestyle.

in the female version of this story, the man gets dumped in favor of the alternative lifestyle.

(cf. crow v. catwoman discussion last week.)

Man, I haven't seen you in ages. This is David Niall Wilson - noticed that you were now on my friends list, and knew I recognized the name. How have you been, man? If you want better service on music in Norfolk go to Skinnies.

Yeah. I noticed you were on PZB's list, so I added you. Skinnies is the place, yes, just easier to walk to the mall on a rainy day (10 min walk vs 30 min walk). Good to hear you've got a new book out... will keep my eyes open.

You won't see it around Norfolk, unless you visit the library (they may have it). The new book was published by Gale / Five Star - they publish mostly for library sales, and their retail discount is horrible. I have a code and a number though, for bookstores that want to order at a better discount...they just say I'm doing a signing, and get 40%...

Didn't you work at a bookstore? Do you still? Poke poke --- (grin).

I ordered it and Gothic! this morning. I work at a chainstore now. I am part of a machine. I love my machine. The Machine is good for Us. Your name is in our machine. JOIN THE MACHINE.
-ahem-
so, if anyone asks- We All Love Decent Educational Networking Bookstores can get it for your readers who don't like ordering online. Pardon the acronym, but I figure I can get away with more if I don't mention "the name".

You ordered it for you, or for your bookstore?

I work it so we get copies of the good stuff in for the store... tho something like that, that'll sell better to the Gaiman fans, but of course, I'm getting it for Caitlin Kiernan.
It's all a question of letting my coworkers see how cool something is and letting them see it sell. Like M. Steven Lucak's collection of essays... I'll save my comments on that for an actual LJ entry. (Two words: GEOFF COOPER)
