The last couple of days I've gotten a lot of writing done, a lot for me anyway. Thirteen pages in the notebook. I need to see what that translates to on the screen, double spaced in a 12 point font.
I've been stupid and daring, having let one person listen to the opening pages, and let a coworker read what I've written so far. There's an element of the retail to what I'm writing, and to hear my coworker say "I've seen this woman" in regards to a minor minor character, it felt satisfying.
Especially since this is a coworker who I trade catty comments with. Mean catty comments. Like... oh... "What does C. have in common with Alex Haley?" "Black Roots."
I never said I was a NICE person.

Douglas Coupland has a new novel coming out. Well, two. One's coming out this year- Eleanor Rigby, but the one that makes me happier that a pig in dirt is J-Pod (a sequal of sorts to Microserfs).
Coupland always has had a special place in my heart, there was something... dynamic about Generation X. I think reading that on the heels of SO much Tama Janowitz, Bret Easton Ellis, Jay McIrney... great writing, but really, I *didn't* know their characters. New York, rich, club hopping. It was a pretty world to look at, but, well, so was Narnia.
Gen X. Now, there were people I knew. They were my friends, my peers, dreamers trapped in deadend jobs. Good fiction can serve two purposes: escape or reflection. Coupland's Generation X provided a crystal clear reflection, of both my real life and my dreams.
I think it's because of something I seem to find psychotically important: shared cultural context (and that goes back to my desperate need "to belong" but more on that later.)
Will (try) and finish these thoughts later... time to go face the dragons.
