Some people in this country go to bed hungry; I do it because I'm too stupid to eat properly. I've thrown off my eating habits recently, and as a result, I'm waking up hungry at 3 in the morning, not getting sufficient sleep.
Tonight I tried something different: instead of just laying there with the emptiness in my gut, I went to 7-11. Tacquitos. Did I spell that right? Is it even a real word? Three of them for 2.79. Memo to self: nothing with the word "Fiesta" is stomach safe at 2:30, and just because spinach is "healthy" doesn't mean it's still healthy after being mixed with cheese, wrapped in a bread-by-product shell, fried, and left to sit on the rolling heat tubes of death.
I chased it down with Kraft rotini with "cheddar". Future food: pasta prepared without water, pre cooked so just pour onto the tray, that comes with it, squeeze out the processed dairy facsima-cheese, zap for a minute. Ummm. Here's the scary part: This cheese stuff is food for a post literate society. The directions are both written out and pictures, the pictures much larger than the words.
The pasta bag carries the instructions "tear at notch"- or words to that effect- and a large arrow indicating where the notch was. Carbs carbs carbs and pictograms. Food for fat stupid people.

A bottle of ginger ale and two cigarettes later, I'm still trying to wrap my brain around a concept: there are people who eat like that EVERY DAY and see nothing wrong with it.
--
Just for giggles: google search on "poor peoples food"- lots of good food history, bunches of social issues, all topped off with a good dollop of snobbery.

Yeah, I wanna be [livejournal.com profile] docbrite when I grow up. Writing about food is a WHOLE helluva lot harder than she makes it look. Her and her LJ entries that make me hungry... wait a sec... now I know why I'm hungry so often...

And as a thought to tide me off to bed: Robert Morley in Theatre of Blood.
